The American Nuclear Society Student Section at The Ohio State University is dedicated to promoting academic excellence, professional development, and public understanding of nuclear science and engineering. We provide students with meaningful opportunities for research collaboration, community outreach, and industry engagement.
What We Do
We organize technical seminars, nuclear facility tours, and career development panels featuring industry professionals. Our chapter actively promotes undergraduate and graduate research while leading STEM education and public outreach initiatives. We proudly represent Ohio State at regional and national ANS conferences, connecting our members with the broader nuclear science community.

Dr. Dean Wang
Academic Advisor
Dr. Dean Wang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The Ohio State University. He holds a Ph.D. in reactor physics and fuel management from MIT. His research focuses on mathematical and computational methods for nuclear reactor modeling and simulation, including neutron transport, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and multiphysics coupling.
Daniel Layer
President
Daniel Layer is an undergraduate student at The Ohio State University studying Chemical Engineering with a minor in Nuclear Engineering. He is pursuing Honors Research Distinction in Nuclear Engineering, where his thesis focuses on the development of an enhanced system failure analysis tool for chemical systems in the conceptual design phase. He is applying this model to the fabrication process of TRISO nuclear fuel particles. He also wants you to know that shell and tube heat exchangers are the best type of heat exchangers. Steam generators in nuclear plants use them for a reason...
Grant Switzer
Vice President
I am a Nuclear Engineering PhD student, working with Dr. Taiyang Zhang in the Reactor Thermal Hydraulics laboratory. I graduated from OSU in 2025 with a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering. My research focuses on experiments involving multi-phase flow in artificial gravity environments.
